My Thrifty Home: DIY Family Art

13 May

Today I bring you another frugal and fun home decor idea: DIY Family Wall Art!

I was inspired to do this last time I visited home – living a few hours away from those I love is tough sometimes, and I knew that if I could convince them all to help me with this project, I’d feel closer to them each day – with their hand prints and signatures as daily reminders!

Here’s how we made it work:

  • I found a nice canvas on sale at Hobby Lobby [$7]. Hint: These are almost always on sale! I wouldn’t buy one unless there’s an in store sale or a coupon available.
  • The hubby and I used old paint from our apartment to paint the canvas a base color. We chose a dark teal, and decided to use a light teal and a white in the foreground.
  • When the family was together, we had each family member paint their hand in one of the foreground colors and leave their hand print on the canvas.
  • Once the hand prints are dry, the fam came back and signed their names over their hand prints with a sharpie [any permanent marker is fine!].
  • Finally, I used adhesive letters or stickers [I found mine on sale at Hobby Lobby – $5] to add words to my canvas. Hint: I would use a craft glue as well – even the stickiest of letters don’t stick forever.

And TA-DA! Fun art for the wall and a great way to feel close to my fam when I miss them most:

I especially love the imperfections! They remind me of all of the imperfections, chaos, and calamity that make my family perfect.
