Apartment Living: Decorating for Christmas in a Small Space

6 Dec

If you live in a small space {like I do!}, Christmas decorating can be a challenge! Here are some of my favorite ways to bring the Holidays into small spaces:

Don’t have room for a big Christmas tree?

Go smaller! Two of my favorites this season: a classic little Charlie Brown Christmas Tree or these Red and Green Sequin Tabletop Trees {on clearance at Target for only $12.48!}.

No room for a tree at all? Get creative – like they did at Apartment Therapy – and make an everyday item, like your bookshelf, into a tree:

And of course, Deck the Walls! You can use art arrangements or wall decals to bring Christmas into your home – and use zero space to do it:

I’m loving this Christmas Tree Decal from secretofthecat {above}, and this Glass Ornament Decal from evgieNev {below}.

If you’re not feeling the decals, consider replacing some of the photo frames on your wall with funky Christmas prints for the season – like this free Holiday Subway art from Eighteen25, or this free Elf printable from LessCake{MoreFrosting}.

And if you’re feeling really bold, deck the walls like Jane  or Veronica {what inspirations!}:

Thrifty Entertaining: My DIY Oscar Party

3 Mar

The husband and I gathered friends together to watch the Oscars this weekend! We had a great time AND saved $$, so I had to share.

When everyone arrived, they got to fill out a cute little ballot and guess who they thought would win the big awards of the night! These little ballots were FREE printables from the blog Twig and Thistle – I used black and white ink to save on printer costs [and I think the black and white look is classy and has a fun vintage feel to it].

We decided to go with the classic “movie theater” menu: popcorn and sodas! We made original and Parmesan brown butter popcorn [from the recipe we found here]. I snagged these cute little red bags for 25cents each at Walmart, and used a scalloped-edge pair of scissors to cut the bags.

Thrifty Note: Cutting the bags to about half of their original size meant smaller servings… which meant we needed to make less overall… which meant less $$. The same goes for most party foods – use small plates, smaller napkins, and smaller glasses while you entertain. Your guests will naturally eat less.

We also set out fun, vintage sodas we found at a local soda shop! I loved the feel these brought to the party.

Add in cake balls for dessert + great friends, and I’d say it was an overall success! What do you do to help save $$ when you entertain?
